Humans and Hyenas Alliance

The Humans and Hyenas Alliance (HAHA) is a collaborative effort to foster coexistence between people and hyenas through research, community engagement, environmental justice, and conservation.

The spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) is a widely misunderstood, yet ecologically critical apex predator that may also have important benefits for public health due to the species’ ability to efficiently scavenge and potentially remove diseases from the environment. The Humans and Hyenas Alliance (HAHA) is a collaborative between wildlife managers, researchers, and community members to better understand human-hyena conflict and work together toward lasting coexistence. While our initial project officially began in 2018 in Nakuru County, Kenya, the HAHA collective views human-hyena coexistence as a far-reaching challenge, and we welcome collaborations to recognize and prioritize our shared wellbeing.

Importantly, we welcome all visitors to and residents near Lake Nakuru National Park and Soysambu Conservancy to please report your spotted hyena sightings and interactions here. We are also happy to provide advice and connect you with appropriate resources if you are experiencing conflict.

If you are a community member living near Lake Nakuru National Park and Soysambu Conservancy, we want to work with you! To get involved, please contact us.
